Guide to shopping local with Stephanie Finn
Holidays Gone Local
This week’s #ThursdayThoughts is all about shopping local, shopping quality & supporting the people directly in our neighbourhoods!
The trend where sustainability meets craftsmanship has been gaining momentum & Stephanie Finn of Burlington Made has the profound ability to bring these creators & shoppers together.
Who is Stephanie Finn?
Stephanie Finn is the creator of Stephanie Street Events & the woman behind Burlington Made.
She is responsible for successful events like Burlington Made at Sound of Music & The Foodie Show.
She took the time to chat with us — sharing her insights into supporting local businesses & some tips to support the makers in your life.
The community that is formed in her wake is built on an appreciation for the craft of the artisans & gifts that emanate the love put into creating them!
With an eye on the details, Stephanie is always evolving her events & finding ways to make the next one THAT-MUCH-BETTER (is that even possible?!)
Why should people be supporting local artisans?
Quality first of all — our artisans are really at the top of their game.
They are some of the best makers in our area & they really put a lot of research, effort & time into their products.
You get to support people in your local economy and at the same time surround yourself with objects and things that support your lifestyle & matter.
Where can people watching find your artisans next?
So we have two markets coming up for the holidays.
Our flagship Handmade Craft Market or Holiday Craft Market, on Saturday November 24 at the Ron Joy ce Centre .
And we are also doing a really fun, stocking-stuffer themed Night Pop-Up Market at St. Georges Church (Alton Village) on Friday December 14th.
It will be an evening sip-and-shop kind of event. About 50% of the items will be $25 and under to get all of those last-minute teacher gifts, stocking stuffers, hostess gifts, coworkers & just get them all covered.
For someone who is new to the market what are some of the questions vendors enjoy answering?
Our vendors love talking about their crafts so come & ask them how they got started making or why they make their products.
A lot of them are trying to solve real-world problems they’ve had them selves.
When I’m walking by a table, & if it’s something I wouldn’t necessarily buy, I still love to stop and complement them on all the work that went into it.
Many of us know makers in our day-to-day circles, how can we support them if we can’t necessarily support them financially?
First, come to the shows & meet them!
See what they are doing & talk to them about their craft.
If you can’t buy it yourself think of somebody who would love to know more about this and help us get the word out.
Share on social media, tag your friends, offer a recommendation on their Facebook or Google or directly to a friend who might be interested.
So many vendors apply to the shows — what are you looking for from the vendors who do apply?
We’re making sure that they would appeal to our shoppers in our demographic — so we need to have a nice balance.
We also want to make sure that they have strong modern aesthetic voice & that there’s a depth of craft.
For example, we get a lot of jewellery applications & we like to favour makers who are making their own beads. Who have not bought them ready-made from the store & they put so much work and effort into it.
They’re simply unique.
Thank you for stopping by, we truly appreciate it!
